Song Response

The song "Asleep" by The Smiths has a certain significance to Charlie, primarily because it can be used to easily describe his situation thus far in the novel.  Charlie may also have a connection with the song, relating the lyrics to his life.  The song discusses being asleep which could be interpreted as an escape from reality.  Charlie encounters problems in his life and dislikes highschool and wishes to sleep, to dream happily, to escape the pain of reality.  Once he escapes from reality, he wishes not to be awakened nor interrupted so as to enjoy the relief which he strongly desires.  Charlie does not want to awaken on his own accord as he will have to face the impending problems in his life.
Lastly, the song discusses the desire for another world better than the one of the present.  Charlie would, given his problems and circumstances, probably want an escape into an entirely different world, one where there is no pain or suffering but happiness and joy for all.
